Huckleberry Hero Hump-Day

Believe it or not...The Greatest American Hero

This week Huck goes back to 1980's prime time TV to portray teacher Ralph Hinkley, who was secretly The Greatest American Hero.
G.A.H. was the struggling super-hero who was given a super suit by aliens and a set of instructions, but unfortunately Ralph lost the instructions. Every week we got to watch Ralph learn how to use the suit "on the job" as he fights crime.
This usually meant watching Ralph trying to fly through the air like a baby bird learning to fly, not realizing how strong he is and usually destroying things accidentally while helping others.
The Greatest American Hero was a great TV show and hopefully it will be brought back as a new show or (as the current Hollywood trend is) a major motion picture.

As you may have noticed, I did this weeks Huckleberry Hero a little different. Instead of xeroxing the original pencils and using colored pencils for color, I inked this sketch and colored it with markers.
I wanted to do something a little different in honor of The Greatest American Hero.

Fantastic Four by Byrne & Me

The above sketch is my re-creation of John Byrne's cover to The Fantastic Four Annual #17, 1983.
John Byrne is one of my favorite artists and a great storyteller/writer. He has had historic runs on the X-men, Superman, Marvel Team-up, Alpha Flight, and so many more. But his run as the writer and artist of The Fantastic Four (in my opinion) is his best work. Byrne took the F.F. "Back to Basics", telling stories the way Stan Lee and Jack Kirby did during the first 102 issues.
I've always loved the cover to the 1983 annual and I wanted to make a poster of it. On Byrne's original sketch, The Fantastic Four had on their new outfits of dark blue/violet and white. I wanted to put them in their original uniforms, so that's how I drew it.
I hope I did Byrne proud.

Old High School Art 3

Three very different sketches from the notebook:

At the top, The Fantastic Four's robot, H.E.R.B.I.E.
Next that smarter than the average bear, Yogi.
And finally a sketch Popeye as a Greek statue.

Old High School Art 2

From the notepad: A couple Pilot Pen sketches of ships from The Greatest Movie Ever Made, Star Wars.

OK I know I misspelled Millennium!

Old High School Art 1

The above images are from an old High School notebook I used to sketch in. In these 4 pieces, I'm trying to draw technology like Jack Kirby. There was no better influence than The King.

Huckleberry Hero Hump-Day

Dynomutt

Yellowjacket

This week Huck has a bionic make over as he portrays Hanna-Barbera's digitized dog, Dynomutt.
Next he dons the third costume of Dr. Henry Pym and becomes the stinging super-hero Yellowjacket.
I've always loved this outfit, absolutely one of the best super-hero costumes ever created.

The Mighty Destroyer

Huckleberry Hound as Popeye

The final HHH pencil sketch that I posted a couple of weeks ago, the Mighty Destroyer finished with colors is the top piece.

And the "Huck as Popeye" special I posted last week, I colored as well.

That should get me caught up. I hope you like them.
